Travelling light

Posted by rom on February 3, 2006

In a few weeks, I will be travelling down south for the JEDI Night party. Since I will only be spending one night there, I have decided not to bring my notebook and simply bring my iPod (for entertainment) and my digital camera.

Without my notebook, I may need to access the ‘net for email and news. I already have Cross-platform Portable Firefox on the iPod shuffle along with Portable OpenOffice.org 2.0.1. For some strange reason, however, I can’t copy Portable Adium – it spits out an error message. Apart from OpenOffice.org, all the other portable apps run on the Mac. Anything else I missed?

How to Fix a Dead Pixel

Posted by rom on February 1, 2006

I had my previous powerbook replaced due to tons of stuck or dead pixels (thanks, Apple!) – yes, more than 10. I don’t know – they just appeared like zits!

Anyway, I still have a powerbook with a single dead pixel but I will try this tip and see if it will magically disappear.

Adium!

Posted by rom on January 22, 2006

I just dumped Yahoo! Messenger and instead installed Adium. Before, I did not want to use it because I couldn’t set my status to invisible. Now that it is supported, I am now using it exclusively as a Yahoo! Messenger client. I still use iChatAV, of course. 🙂

Multiple Streams with QT Broadcaster

My friends who are doing web-casting for the University of the Philippines will be happy to find out that we can do more with what we have compared to before. This tip is very essential to be able to cater to all our audiences. I am sure that our remote viewers will appreciate it.

Speed up Firefox

Posted by rom on January 9, 2006

Yes, Firefox is one of the fastest browsers out there right now. However, if you are using Firefox on Mac OS X, you can still speed it up by using extensions. Try FasterFox and Chrome Cleaner. [sorry but you have to google ’em]

On my 15″ 1.67Ghz powerbook, clicking the Firefox icon on the Dock brings it up and that is it, not a single bounce. Cool, eh?

Portable Firefox

Posted by rom on January 8, 2006

For those iPod Shuffle totting geeks out there (well, this actually works on any USB thumb drive hehehe), enable disk use and allocate enough space to store two copies of Firefox. Yes, two copies: one for the Mac and another for Windows. Don’t bother with Linux since it comes with Firefox by default.

Next, download Portable Firefox. This is a custom-made portable Firefox as opposed to the Windows-only version found at PortableApps.com. Install the application and customize. That is it! 🙂 You now have a cross-platform open source web browser. No need to install one on a Windows computer, if you cannot find Linux or Mac.

If you use OpenOffice.org, you can add Portable OpenOffice.org as well but it only works on Windows computers.
