Tiger on Tiger

Posted by rom on April 30, 2005

I was just asking some Sun evangelists as to why Tiger (Java 5.0) is not available on Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4) and they told me that since James Gosling, the father of Java, is using a Mac, it will not take long for Java 5.0 to be released for Apple’s Tiger. And true, indeed. Yesterday, the day Apple released Tiger, a preview release of Java 5.0 has been made available for download. Coolness!

I have installed it but have yet to test it. I am hoping that with this new jvm, I will get better performance (and hope that my applications work now).

Stay tuned.

One day to go

Posted by rom on April 28, 2005

In a few hours, Tiger will be released to the public. I cannot wait to get a copy of the new Mac OS X. I will start to back-up all my data so that I can do a clean install. Yeah, I am not comfortable “upgrading” a previous OS installation.

Anyway, since the rest of the world will be getting it tomorrow, except for the Philippines, I am hoping that the order that I made will be fulfilled tomorrow as well and hopefully gets shipped early next week. That will great!

BTW, a new breed of G5’s just came out. I am tempted to get myself the entry-level dual processor PowerMac G5 but since I rarely use a desktop system (I always use my 15″ Powerbook), it might just be overkill. I just hope that the iMac G5 or eMac will be updated soon, too.

What makes Tiger a must-have for me

Posted by rom on April 23, 2005

Apple is now shipping its latest operating system, Mac OS X v. 4 or Tiger as it is popularly known. I have placed my order for the Family Pack, which gives me 5 licenses for our powerbooks, I have a 15″ and my wife has a 12″. Cheaper than getting two separate packages.

What makes me buy it right away? Well, apart from my usual illness of always living on the ‘bleeding edge’, there are some very important improvements and/or additions that come with the new operating system.

Apart from the most popular additions such as Spotlight, Dashboard, etc., I have listed some other features that make Tiger a must-have:

1. Addressbook sharing via .Mac
2. Graphing Calculator
3. Built-in language translator
4. Smart Folders like the iTunes Smart Playlist
5. Built-in dictionary
6. Jabber support
7. Multi-person Audio Conferencing using iChat
8. .Mac Email Alias support
9. Smart Mailboxes like item 4
10. Per-Account Email Signature
11. Network-based Home Directory (this is so cool!)
12. VPN on Demand
13. XGrid
14. JPEG 2000 and RAW Camera support in Preview (great!)
15. PDF Annotation in Preview (woohoo!!!!)
16. Encrypt PDF documents
17. Support for PDF Forms as well
18. Quicktime 7 and H.264
19. Secure Virtual Memory (finally!)
20. Password Helper (for password generation – very useful since I have migrated my dictionary-based passwords to something that is even non-pronounceable)
21. VoiceOver Spoken interface (this I want to test)

These are just some. I am sure that there are some more minor tweaks introduced in Tiger. I am hoping that I get it first week of May. 🙂

OpenOffice.org Viewer Updated

Posted by rom on April 22, 2005

A former student of mine, Cip, just updated their final year undergraduate project, OpenOffice.org File Viewer – OOoView. The update allows OOoView to support OpenOffice.org Office suite versions 1.0-1.1.4 and the 2.0beta file formats.

You may download the source or the binary.

Your feedback will be appreciated but your participation in making it better will be valued more. 🙂

Glad I did it, when will you?

Posted by rom on April 22, 2005

I am really happy with my decision to switch to the Mac many moons ago. This is coming from a Linux user, of course. Do not get me wrong but I do love Linux having used it since the mid-90s. And yes, I did use Windows, too – from Windows 3.11 to 95, 98/98SE, NT, 2000 and XP Pro. However, I usually configure my x86-based computer with both Windows and Linux and simply use Windows for games. Since I have stopped playing games already – I have outgrown it but I am sure that in the future, I will go back to playing games again but on a console or a portable device (PSP, *hint* *hint*) and no longer on the PC.

Anyway, my last PC was bought two and a half years ago – from a computer loan programme of the University. I immediately installed Windows XP (yes, licensed, of course!) and OpenOffice.org office suite (I just refuse to support Microsoft Office file formats) along with some games that I bought such as Command & Conquer. 🙂 Well, that did not last long – the PC just kept on BSODing on me up to the point of literally kicking the CPU out of frustration!

I ended up formatting the drive and installing Mandrake Linux. Everything went very well from then on but no games for me. Heck, I was not losing anything anyway – just precious time and besides, my brother was getting addicted to it to the point of no longer studying. I hate it when that happens and I do not want my kids to do the same thing in the future — so no computer games for me, no games for them!

This did not last long since I needed a portable for work. I was contemplating on getting an IBM Thinkpad or a Toshiba. The Thinkpad is a better choice for me since IBM supports Linux very well. Apple’s adverts on ACM and IEEE journals and magazines had me consider the Mac. And to cut the story short, I closed my eyes and jumped — bought an iBook. 🙂

Well, this article may also help you decide to switch. Do not take my word for it – study the advantages and disadvantages of owning a Mac. One very glaring disadvantage is the addiction on adding more and more accessories to your Mac. 🙂

So – come on and join the enlightened ones.
