Woods Hole: Day 3

Posted by rom on September 29, 2004

The morning started with strong winds whistling outside. Yes, the storm or more like our usual tropical depression, is still here. I don’t know how long the weather will be like this but they say it’ll be raining the rest of the day – HOPE NOT!

Will fill you in later as the day progresses.

Woods Hole: Day 2

Posted by rom on September 29, 2004

After having a potato-based diet since Monday morning, I finally got to eat rice today. Whew! Lunch was white rice with beef stir fry. Not bad, I must say. The dessert table offered a lot of tempting cakes and pastries as well as ice cream. Argh! Must resist… it is difficult when you are offered free food every single day! Hehehe…

Anyway, today’s a lousy day due to the weather – it’s raining and I did not even bother to bring an umbrella or raincoat thinking that our classes will be in the same building as the dormitory. Shesh.

The Human-Computer Interaction lecture was pretty fun! Found a nifty tool that checks for a website’s accessibility or something. Tried it with a couple of sites and all failed! Bwahaha. I will talk more about it when I find the URL again.

Today’s highlight is a lecture on Decision Support by Prof. Edward Shortliffe, MD, PhD. The very same one who authored the book that I’m using for my classes and for reference. Darn! If I only knew, I would have brought that book with me – even if it was heavy – and ask him to sign it! 🙂 Even though his lecture was only for 2 hours, it was really interesting.

Oh yeah, I bought two shirts as souvenirs – one for me and another for the wife.

Yeah, yeah – photos will be posted soon. 🙂

Wonder of wonders!

Posted by rom on September 28, 2004

I am in the US of A already – enjoying the beautiful Fall season here in the East coast. I promised I’ll be posting photos but that will come later in the week. I am still trying to adjust – my body clock still is in Philippine time and it may take another day for it to normalize.

The Medical Informatics course at the Marine Biology Laboratory is very interesting. We have perfect attendance, 30 students, from all over the US and me being the only non-American in the batch. My room-mate is an orthopedic doctor and a retired US Navy Admiral – beat that! 🙂 And no, I have not seen the great white shark that visited the Woods Hole cove.

I have been in touch with friends and family in the Philippines both via mobile phone (I am scared to see what my bill will be this October) and via the Internet. I can chat using ICQ and Yahoo! Messenger. And what is better is — I can call home for free using voice-over-IP. Yes, thanks to Xten! I have proven their technology and it is simply amazing. Get their products and get them now! Not to forget, I am also using the network of Sipphone. Try them, they provide great services!

Back to the course. I brought my Impette with me thinking that I’d be able to use it during the lectures but lo and behold! The course provided notebooks for EACH participant. Yes, we all were assigned notebooks for the week. The problem is, I did not inform them that I wanted a Mac! Darn it – I thought that I can use mine. Anyway, someone requested for a Mac and he got a TiBook! Good for him! As for me, I am back to Windows hell! BUMMER! Oh well – one week of torture. Good thing that I have fast Internet connection in my room where Impette happily gets her dose of Net packets!

Guess what? I have just finished Dan Brown’s Angels & Demons! Yes, it is one cool prequel to the Da Vinci Code. I opted to read this before Da Vinci code so that I’d have a better grasp of the entire story rather than doing a “Star Wars trilogy then prequels” thing! 🙂

I just remembered – Northwest uses a version of Linux on their planes. I cannot help but notice the projection screen and TVs to feature some of those text messages from a Linux console. I was tempted to ask what was happening and perhaps offer my assistance but then again, I might just cause the plane to crash! Heheheh…

As for the rest of my friends, I am back online and very much alive! I will be monitoring my mailbox and maybe you can catch me on Yahoo!, ICQ or iChatAV!

More updates in the near future… photos to come soon.

Neutered products?

Posted by rom on September 16, 2004

Microsoft decided to neuter its much hyped Longhorn and making it Shorthorn now. Its promise of delivering a revolutionary file system, WinFS, will be realized, say maybe in 2008? Microsoft is fond of doing this just to stir up the industry. This is actually good for competitors. It keeps the competitors on its toes guessing what the Redmond folks will be releasing in the near future and devising new products to compete against it. This delay is good for Mac users, potential switchers and Open Source advocates.

With Shorthorn being downsized and WinFS being offered as an add-on to XP, 2003 and, of course, Shorthorn, the question now is – will users upgrade to Shorthorn when it can get the super-hyped WinFS file system for XP? Maybe it is time for these Windows users to give Mac OS X a try specially with the next iteration, Mac OS X version 4, code-named “Tiger”, and see what WinFS is trying to achieve.

Microsoft gave in to the pressure, the first time I actually heard it, to deliver Virtual PC 7 to Apple G5 users. However, this does not come without a surprise. Well, it is actually no longer a surprise, at least for me. Microsoft scaled down the Virtual PC 7 features as well. In the same tune as Shorthorn, Virtual PC 7 will be released with very minor improvements over the current Virtual PC 6.1. Yes, it sucks but I am not using Virtual PC. I actually have no need for it. Been Microsoft-free for a long time now.
