Yonah’s Virtualization Technology

Posted by rom on December 22, 2005

Just read an Anandtech article on Intel’s Yonah and the virtualization technology (VT) that is part of Yonah’s features. This is quite interesting specially since rumours are bouncing off bulletin boards and web sites that the first Yonah computers will come from Apple and announced next month!

With hardware virtualization, VirtualPC may no longer be needed! Imagine being able to run multiple OS on a single computer without rebooting! Yes, this is done by software now with VirtualPC on Mac and Windows and Xen on Linux but the performance of VT will surely blow away any software implementation.

Question now is – if you were to get a computer that has VT enabled, what will you get? If Apple decides not to allow Mac OS X to run on non-Apple hardware, getting a Mac will be your best solution! Not only do you get Mac OS X but you can run practically all x86-based OS out there! Try that with a Dell, Fujitsu, Lenovo, Acer, Asus, Toshiba, HP and Alienware? I am sure that you can run all but not Mac OS X (you probably can but with a lot of tweaking).

This is Apple’s move to gain a large chunk of the hardware and probably the OS marketshare! Let’s wait til Jobs makes the announcement this January 2006! I cannot wait!!!!
