Oxford University’s Computer Center goes Open Source

Posted by rom on November 10, 2004

Well, it just goes to show that great universities tend to do things the same way (almost). 🙂 The University of the Philippines’ University Computer Center has been running its entire operations (pretty much the same services as Oxford’s Computer Center) on Open Source software. There’s really no “migration” to speak of — been getting quite a number of requests for interviews on how we migrated our systems from Microsoft platform to Open Source.

I just wonder why other universities still spend a lot of money buying proprietary software for its operations. Well, maybe the required Open Source competency is not present to back it up but how difficult can it be? Everything is out there, available for downloading.

SO, to most of my colleagues in the Philippines running their university operations on proprietary software, wake up! Don’t spend millions of pesos on software, spend it on training.
